Okinawa in winter is a paradise for humpback whales!

Humpback whales spent the summer in the northern seas around the Aleutian Islands, feeding on an abundance of food.

In winter, they return to the waters around Zamami Island, surrounded by beautiful coral reefs about 40 km west of Naha City in Okinawa, a warm and quiet place with quiet waves, to breed.

*Unlike the summer season, the ocean in Okinawa in winter, when the whales arrive, has higher waves throughout the year.Infants and the elderly may not be allowed on board due to sea conditions.

*Pregnant customersare not allowed to participate for safety reasons due to the adverse effects of vibrations from the ship's engines.

*Tour may be cancelled due to sea and weather conditions.

Whales are wild animals and may not be seen. In the unlikely event that whales are not spotted, we will do one of the following

The probability of detection does not change depending on the time of day. You may be able to find it in the morning but not in the afternoon, and vice versa. Please decide the flight according to your schedule.

Q. What is the difference between the two?Is there a place to leave valuables and luggage?

There are no lockers at the meeting place, so please keep your valuables with you.

Q. What happens if it rains?

If it rains enough not to interfere with the operation of the vessel, the vessel will sail. Cancellation due to rain will incur a cancellation fee. In case of severe weather or high waves, the tour will be cancelled. In case of cancellation, we will contact you the day before or on the day of the tour, and the tour will be rescheduled for another day or a refund will be made. Refunds will be made by bank transfer, but please note that in the event of a no-show due to weather conditions, bank transfer fees will be borne by the customer.

Q. Is there anything I need to prepare in advance?

A kappa, binoculars, and a towel are useful. The sea in winter in Okinawa can be windy and cold, so be sure to keep warm. The boat can be bumpy, so we recommend that you wear non-slip shoes such as sneakers.

Q. I am worried about getting seasick...

It is recommended to take anti-sickness medicine 30 minutes before boarding the boat. Looking into the distance, licking candy, and staying in a well-ventilated area seem to help prevent sickness.

Whale-watching tours, one of the most exciting winter experiences in Okinawa, allow you to feel the power of humpback whales up close and personal. It is a valuable experience to observe the various behaviors of these huge whales, which are about 15 meters long and weigh 30 tons. Conveniently departing from Naha, this tour is suitable for everyone from young children to the elderly, and is available only from December to April, when you can enjoy the unique behaviors of the whales, such as breaching (leaping), tail slapping (slapping tail fin), and spouting (splashing).

The winter-only whale watching tour in Okinawa was truly a breathtaking experience! We were able to see the magnificent sight of the whales right in front of us, and we all cheered especially when they were breaching. I called Kerama Tours to find out what I could experience because I was traveling in winter, and they kindly recommended whale watching over the phone 😊It was smooth before and after the reservation.
