1945年3月27日に渡嘉敷島に米軍の攻略部隊が上陸し、島の人々は北端の北山に追込まれ3月28日、かねて指示されていたとおりに集団自決をし、

いくつもの命が失われました。忘れないように時代を繰り返さないように沖縄戦で犠牲となった島民、日本兵ら約600人の犠牲者を島守りの神として仰ぎ祭られている慰霊塔です。
