Okinawa Main Island and Kerama Islands

慶良間諸島でカヌーを楽しむ人たち

When it comes to naming some of the most popular spots for domestic travel, many people may think of Okinawa as one of the answers.

The main island of Okinawa, with its mild and cheerful climate at any time of the year, is a wonderful and uplifting place to visit any time of the year.

The secret to its popularity is that you do not need a passport and can enjoy the tropical travel experience as if you were abroad.

Do you know about the Kerama Islands, a group of remote islands that can be reached by extending the distance from Tomari Port on the main island of Okinawa?

It may sound like a lot of work to fly to Okinawa and then travel by boat again, but the Kerama Islands are highly popular and well worth the effort.

So this time, I would like to introduce the charms of each of Okinawa's main island and the Kerama Islands.

We hope you will find this information useful if you are considering a trip to Okinawa!

main island of Okinawa

Let's start by checking out the main island of Okinawa, where many of you may have actually been before.

The main island of Okinawa is located in the sea more than 700 km further south than Kagoshima City.

As can be imagined from its location, the island is characterized by a warm subtropical climate that differs from that of the mainland.

Ranking of popular tours in Okinawa Honto Island

Attractions of the Okinawa Main Island

The charms of the main island of Okinawa are too diverse to list: scenery, culture, climate, and climate.

The values and mood that were originally fostered in the Ryukyu Kingdom, not in Japan, still run through the foundation of the country, and the American culture that came into the country after World War II is also present.

The ease of sightseeing in a place where tourism is a major industry is one of the reasons why so many people continue to be attracted to the area.

Spend a relaxing time in the beautiful sea!

Among its many attractions, the most important tourist resource is its beautiful sea.

Coral reefs grow in clusters in many areas of the Okinawan sea, and coral purifies the water quality of the sea through photosynthesis in the sea, thereby increasing the clarity of the water.

There is no end to the number of people who visit Okinawa for swimming and other activities in the beautiful blue ocean, not only in summer but also in winter.

Enjoy local delicacies!

Okinawa's food culture is also different from that of mainland Japan.

The first characteristic of Okinawan gourmet food that comes to mind is the extensive use of pork.

In Okinawa, pigs are said to be edible except for their squeals, and you can see the impact of pigs' ears being sold as mimigar, pigs' feet as tebichi, and skinned pigs as chiraga.

There are also many familiar dishes, such as Soki Soba, which contains Soki, the part of the meat that resembles spare ribs, and Rafte, which is three pieces of meat boiled in a stew like a pork chop.

Also, the variety of gourmet foods is very attractive, such as rare Okinawan fish, sea grapes, tropical fruits like mangoes, and steaks just like in the U.S.

The best relaxation in the great outdoors!

And the main island of Okinawa is also characterized by its size.

Although it is a remote island, its area is quite vast, and the island is filled with a variety of natural landscapes.

The locations are diverse, including cliffs and headlands with spectacular views, mysterious caves, pure white sandy beaches derived from coral, inland areas where numerous subtropical plants can be seen, and rivers lined with mangroves.

The magnificent natural scenery, which you cannot experience in the city, will bring relaxation to the deepest parts of your body and mind.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots

Now, let me introduce some sightseeing spots on the main island of Okinawa.

There are too many attractive spots to list, but we have picked out five here.

Churaumi Aquarium

The number one tourist attraction on the entire main island of Okinawa is the Churaumi Aquarium, where tropical and rare fish that live in the Okinawan sea are gathered in one place.

Chura means "beautiful" or "pure" in the local Okinawan language.

Recommendations

The concept of Churaumi Aquarium is to "encounter the Okinawan sea."

The exhibits are divided by marine environment, such as shallow water, coral reefs, and deep sea, allowing visitors not only to see beautiful fish, but also to learn about the environment in which each species lives while observing them.

The Churaumi Aquarium is also the first aquarium in the world to successfully raise whale sharks, which have become the aquarium's mascot character, on a long-term basis, making it a very valuable exhibit.

The same is true for the nanyo manta rays, and many other new and rare species can be seen at this unique spot in Okinawa.

Directions from Naha Airport

The address of Churaumi Aquarium is 424 Ishikawa, Motobu-cho, Kunigami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture.

Located much further north than Naha City, most tourists basically use rental cars to stretch their legs.

It is most reliable to use the car navigation system of the rental car and search the route by the name of the facility.

In addition, some car navigation systems cannot search by facility name, in which case it is recommended to use "Ocean Expo Park" or map code 553075797.

Sumuri Castle (ancient ruins of Osaka)

Gusuku (castles) scattered throughout the prefecture exist as proof that the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawa's predecessor, flourished.

The nine gusuku groups have been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the category of "Gusuku and Related Heritage Sites of the Kingdom of Ryukyu," indicating that they are rare historic sites in the world.

Recommendations

Shuri Castle is the representative of this group of gusuku.

The vermilion-dyed structures are widely known as symbols of Ryukyuan culture, and many of you may have seen them through the media.

It is still fresh in our minds that a large fire destroyed a large area in 2019, but reconstruction is currently well underway and tours are available in some areas.

Shuri Castle has been destroyed by fire four times in the past, and has been reconstructed each time.

If you look at it while thinking about its history, you can say that its current appearance is well worth seeing.

Directions from Naha Airport

Shuri Castle is located at 1 Shuri Kinjo-machi, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.

Since it is a landmark spot, it is easy to find a route. When traveling by rental car, it is recommended to look up "Shurijo Park" in the navigation system.

If you are traveling by bus, the closest bus stop is "Shurijo Park Entrance".

International Street

Kokusai-dori is a downtown area that most visitors to the main island of Okinawa visit at least once.

As its name suggests, this commercial area is lined with international stores and a wide variety of establishments, ranging from boutiques and other commercial establishments to fashionable restaurants, bars, and other nightlife establishments.

 Recommendations

The center of Kokusai-dori is a shopping street.

It is a center of fashion and various cultural trends, as well as a gourmet area where visitors can enjoy eating and drinking.

There are many stores where you can buy souvenirs, and being near the prefectural government office, accessibility is excellent.

Hotels and other facilities are clustered in this area, so it is a good idea to use this area as a base for sightseeing.

Directions from Naha Airport

Kokusai-dori is located close to Naha Airport, and the use of the Yui Rail, an urban monorail, is recommended in addition to renting a car.

The distance for a rental car is 5 km, and the trip takes about 15 minutes.

If using the Yui Rail, get off at either Kencho-mae Station on the west side of Kokusai-dori or Makishi Station on the east side.

strand of hair on top of the head

The Onna Village area, which stretches along the west coast of the central part of the main island north of Naha City, is famous as the best resort area on the main island of Okinawa.

Onna Village has some of the best natural scenery on the main island of Okinawa, including Manzamo, a 20-meter-high cliff made of Ryukyu limestone and uplifted coral.

Recommendations

The Manzakage overlooks the East China Sea and is one of the most scenic spots on the main island, where you can look down on the shimmering blue and emerald green waters.

Furthermore, the cliff tops of Manzakage are covered with grass, so visitors can enjoy a relaxing tropical natural landscape along with subtropical plants that cover the entire area in abundance.

Directions from Naha Airport

The address of Manzakage is 2767 Aza Onna, Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture.

This is one of the most famous spots on the main island of Okinawa, so simply enter "Manzamo" in your car navigation system search and you will have no problem finding your way there.

If you use public transportation, the nearest bus stop is "Manza Beach-mae".

Blue Cave

Onna Village area is also home to one of the best tourist spots on the main island, the Blue Cave.

This is a cave by the sea, and it is a popular spot because of the mysterious phenomenon of the cave's interior shining with blue natural light.

Recommendations

The Ao no grotto is a land of unexplored and mysterious landscapes, yet it is easily accessible.

It is adjacent to a scenic spot called Maeda Misaki, which has a large parking lot, making it easy to visit.

Another major attraction is that Cape Maeda offers snorkeling and other activity tours that allow visitors to enjoy diving into the shimmering blue waters of the Ao no Tsubo (Blue Cave).

Directions from Naha Airport

The address of the Blue Cave is 469-1 Maeda, Onna Village, Kunigami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture.

If you are planning to visit the Blue Cave by rental car, it is more reliable to search for "Cape Maeda" rather than "Blue Cave.

The nearest bus stop is Kuraha, but be sure to check in advance that it will take some time to walk there, 15 minutes.

Kerama Islands

SUP de 座間味TRIP!!1DAYツアー

Here we would like to look at the Kerama Islands.

Although it is necessary to travel further from the main island of Okinawa, it is possible to go to the Kerama Islands on a day trip.

Kerama is filled with many attractions not found on the main island!

What are the Kerama Islands like?

座間味村阿嘉島

The Kerama Islands are located approximately 40 km west of the main island of Okinawa.

It consists of 36 islands in the East China Sea, including 5 inhabited islands, which can be seen from the west coast such as Onna Village.

The islands are popular for their beautiful seas, which are more remote from the main island of Okinawa, and for their more relaxed environment than the more crowded main island of Okinawa, where visitors can enjoy a tropical travel experience.

How to Buy Ferry Tickets and Notes

The entrance to the Kerama Islands is Tomari Port in Naha City, regardless of which island you are heading to.

However, there are some precautions that must be taken when traveling to the Kerama Islands.

The first thing to keep in mind is that reservations are basically required at least one day in advance.

Especially during the summer vacation period, which is the high season for sightseeing, it is often impossible to board the boat without a reservation.

Reservations are accepted two months in advance.

There are three ways to make a reservation: by phone, fax, or web, so please use the one you are familiar with to avoid mistakes.

Tickets can be purchased and issued on the day of boarding and must be received 15 minutes prior to boarding, so be sure not to be late.

In addition, the sea in Okinawa during the summer is often rough due to typhoons, and boats may be cancelled depending on the weather that day.

The availability of the boat is determined at 8:00 a.m., so be sure to check the website on days when the weather is unfavorable.

How to get to Kerama Islands from Naha Airport

As explained above, when heading to the Kerama Islands from Naha Airport, you will first go to Tomari Port in the city, and then board a boat for the trip.

Two types of boats are available: high-speed boats and ferries, so choose the best boat while comparing time and price.

From Naha Airport to Tomari Port

The address of Tomari Port is 3-25-1 Maejima, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.

Since a rental car will get you there quickly, we recommend using the Marin Annex Parking Lot or Tomari Pier Underground Parking Lot, both of which are located nearby.

The nearest monorail station is Miebashi, from which it is a 10-minute walk.

The nearest bus station is Tomari-Takahashi, around 8 minutes on foot.

From Tomari Port to Zamami Port

There are two boats that run to Zamami Port: Ferry Zamami and Queen Zamami, a high-speed boat.

Because the route can be rough, the time required varies from day to day, with the ferry taking an estimated 120 minutes and the high-speed boat taking about 70 minutes.

Timetable and Fare

Timetables vary depending on the season, so please check the official website or contact us to confirm the schedule according to your travel plans.

The fare is 4,090 yen round trip for the ferry and 6,080 yen round trip for the high-speed boat, respectively.

Tomari Port to Aka Port

Of the same Kerama Islands, Zamami Island and Aka Island are close neighbors.

Therefore, the same boat will be used to reach Aka Port as the one bound for Zamami Port.

The order of port calls may change back and forth depending on the timetable, so be sure not to miss your disembarkation timing.

There is also an inexpensive intra-village route connecting the two islands, making it easy to travel between the two islands.

Timetable and Fare

Fares for both ferry and high-speed boat are the same as those for Zamami Port.

The fare for the intra-village route is 300 yen.

From Tomari Port to Tokashiki Port

To travel to Tokashiki Island, you will need to use the "Ferry Tokashiki" or the "Marine Liner Tokashiki," a high-speed boat.

The distance is closer than the two islands above, and you should consider 70 minutes by ferry or 35 minutes by high-speed boat as the approximate time required.

Timetable and Fare

This route may change with the season, with the time of day changing or the number of flights increasing, so be sure to check the official timetable for your itinerary.

The fare is 3,210 yen for a round-trip ferry ride and 4,810 yen for a round-trip high-speed boat ride.

From Tomari Port to Naganu Island

The three islands listed above were inhabited, but from Tomari Port you can also visit the uninhabited Naganu Island.

Naganu Island is a fairly short distance from the main island of Okinawa, and the only means of transportation is by ferry, which takes approximately 20 minutes.

Timetable and Fare

There are basically three flights from Tomari Port to Naganu Island at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 a.m.

The fare is 4200 yen round-trip for adults, but note that the fare is 5800 yen only during the tourist season from July to September.

Attractions of Kerama

慶良間諸島でカヌーを楽しむ人たち

You can enjoy the tropical atmosphere on the main island of Okinawa, but if you extend your trip to the Kerama Islands, you can immerse yourself in a more deeply tropical atmosphere.

The Kerama Islands were designated as a national park in 2014, so to speak, and the beauty of the location is endorsed by the government.

Each of the islands, a mix of inhabited and uninhabited, has its own unique mood and attracts many visitors every summer to stretch their wings.

Kerama blue that fascinates the world

慶良間諸島でSUPを楽しむ人たち

The sea, which glistens like a jewel in the sun, is known as Keramas blue, and attracts many people.

The bottom of the sea is stained pure white by the coral reefs that grow in clusters and the calcareous sand created by the breaking up of the coral reefs, which reflects the sunlight and creates the brilliance of the sea.

A sanctuary for marine activities

慶良間シュノーケル

Many say that the waters of the Kerama Islands are even more beautiful than those of the main island of Okinawa, and there are more than 100 dive sites scattered throughout the waters of the archipelago.

The sea of Kerama attracts many divers as a sacred place for diving.

The area also offers an optimal environment for marine activities, as various marine activities such as snorkeling and SUP can be enjoyed on the beach.

Magnificent Nature

The main attraction of the Kerama Islands is that you can encounter nature close to the original landscape of Okinawa, which is different from the urbanized Naha City and the main island of Okinawa, where many areas have been developed as resort areas.

Many plants peculiar to the subtropical climate can also be seen, and the clumps of bilou and ryukyu pine trees, which resemble palm trees, are a unique feature of the landscape.

The unique landscape of Kerama is also home to local creatures such as the Ryukyu leatherback turtle.

Attraction of Kerama Blue

慶良間

It is not only humans who are drawn to the beauty of the Kerama Blue Sea, but creatures as well.

If you go snorkeling or diving underwater, you will see a wide variety of tropical fish and sea creatures brightly coloring the area.

The view from the clear waters is like a natural aquarium.

You will surely be captivated by its beauty!

Recommended Sightseeing Spots

Let us introduce you to the must-see spots in the Kerama Islands in order.

Among the many attractive spots, we have selected five following the main island of Okinawa.

Kitahama Beach (Nishibama Beach)

First, let me introduce you to Kitahama (Nishibama) Beach, which boasts the best scenery on Aka Island.

You may be wondering whether the name "north" or "nishi" is ambiguous, but in Okinawa, the east, west, south, and north are called agari, iri, hee, and nishi, respectively.

Although there are differences in the names of each region, the north is called Nishi in all regions.

That is why it has the seemingly eccentric name of Kitahama (Nishibama).

Recommendations

The ocean facing Kitahama Beach has beautiful coral reefs and is one of the best snorkeling spots in the Kerama Islands.

It is a beach that is easy to visit for sightseeing, as it has facilities for ocean fun, such as restrooms, showers, and a small shop for shopping.

Directions from Naha Airport and Aka Port

As mentioned earlier, from Naha Airport to Aka Port is via Tomari Port in Naha City.

From Aka Port to Kitahama Beach is a 20-minute walk.

It takes about 7 minutes to get there by bicycle, so renting a bicycle is also recommended.

Kozamami Beach

Along with Kitahama Beach on Aka Island, Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island is a famous tourist beach.

It has received a two-star rating in that Michelin Green Guide Japon, indicating that it is highly acclaimed even by global standards.

Recommendations

Kozamami Beach is a 3-kilometer stretch of crescent-shaped beach filled with coral-derived white sand that glistens pure white in the sunlight.

The sea at this beach is known as one of the clearest in the Kerama Islands, and you will be able to see tropical fish just a short walk into the sea from the surf.

This is another popular beach with showers, toilets, and a rental store for activity equipment, making it a good environment for sightseeing.

Directions from Naha Airport and Zamami Port

First, we will go to Zamami Port from Naha Airport via Tomari Port.

It is a 20-minute walk from Zamami Port, so the distance is slightly time-consuming considering the return boat time.

The village bus will take you there in about 5 minutes, so you may consider taking that or a cab.

Aka Bridge

Let me introduce Aka Ohashi Bridge, a major transportation hub, as a slight change of pace from the beach.

Aka Ohashi Bridge connects Aka Island and Keiruma Island, and the large bridge can be seen from the ferry boats heading to the islands.

Recommendations

Aka Bridge is not only a bridge, but also the most scenic spot in the Kerama Islands.

From the bridge, you can see the beautiful Keramas blue ocean, and because of the clarity of the sea, you can also see silhouettes of tropical fish and sea turtles passing in the water.

Directions from Naha Airport and Aka Port

From Naha Airport to Aka Port, as mentioned above, you will go from Tomari Port.

The Aka Bridge is right next to Aka Port and is only a one-minute walk away.

The bridge is directly visible and of a conspicuous size, so even those who are not confident in their sense of direction are unlikely to get lost.

Awaren Beach

Next, let me introduce another beach, Aharen Beach from Tokashiki Island.

Abaren Beach is the main beach on Tokashiki Island, with its white sand beach, coral, and crystal clear waters.

The beach is also 800 meters long, a size that does not make it feel cramped, allowing visitors to spend their time in a relaxed atmosphere.

Recommendations

One of the pleasant aspects of this beach is the calmness of the sea, which is attributed to the gentle curvature of the terrain.

Because the waves are quiet, even young children can enjoy swimming in the ocean.

The beach is also equipped with all the facilities necessary for ocean fun, including restrooms, a store, and rental of activity equipment, making it the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful coral reefs.

Directions from Naha Airport and Tokashiki Port

From Naha Airport, we will aim for Tokashiki Port via Tomari Port.

A slight caveat is the distance from Tokashiki Port to Awaren Beach.

The walk would take about an hour, which would not leave much time for playing, considering the return trip.

We recommend taking the local bus, which takes about 20 minutes to reach the bus stop "Abalen Beach".

Naganum Island

If you want to combine a sense of remoteness and resort in your Kerama sightseeing, why not visit Naganu Island, an uninhabited island?

Naganu means "long and narrow," and the island lives up to its name with its long and narrow shape.

The island is not very large, as a round trip on foot takes about 30 minutes, but it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful environment and photogenic sea from an island with no people.

Although the island is uninhabited with no permanent residents, the convenience of the island is well ensured by the operation of a rest house and restaurants for tourists.

Recommendations

Many of the beaches in Okinawa are made of coral sand, which is sand made of crushed and polished coral, and almost all of Naganu Island is covered with such coral sand.

The island is filled with calcareous white sand, and when exposed to sunlight, it is stunningly beautiful. The contrast of the blue sea and blue sky is almost picturesque.

Enjoy marine activities on the most photogenic island of all, and you are sure to get the most out of it.

Also, sea turtles sometimes visit the island to lay eggs during the summer, so depending on your luck, you may be able to see them.

Directions from Naha Airport and Tomari Port

Travel to Naganu Island is as described in the section above.

It is important to keep in mind that rates change between summer and other times of the year.

All of the islands offer scenic beaches overlooking the Keramas blue ocean, and are sure to provide the best activity experience!

Activities in Kerama

Let's check out some of the activities that are being actively enjoyed in Kerama.

Those who have never experienced this activity under the beautiful ocean and tropical sun will surely be addicted to it!

snorkeling

シュノーケル,慶良間

First, snorkeling, the king of marine activities in Okinawa, is a diving activity in which you wear a snorkel with a breathing tube and underwater glasses together with several other pieces of light clothing.

Because snorkelers can breathe through their snorkels, they can enjoy long underwater walks without having to raise their heads above the surface of the sea.

Fun & Attraction

The Kerama Blue Sea has outstanding transparency, so the underwater world seen through underwater glasses is remarkably clear.

The experience of seeing coral and tropical fish, a variety of colorful creatures, and sometimes sea turtles, will impress you like no other place on earth.

The ease with which no special qualifications are required is also a great point, and anyone can enjoy it without hesitation.

diving

ダイビング

Diving is the marine activity counterpart to snorkeling, and allows one to stay deeper and longer underwater.

This is a great way to experience underwater swimming while breathing freely thanks to the oxygen in the tanks, instead of requiring heavy equipment such as oxygen tanks, regulators, and other equipment.

Fun & Attraction

The appeal of diving is the feeling of oneness with the sea.

You will have a fantastic and happy time as if you were one of the creatures living in the sea of Kerama.

In particular, the Kerama Islands are known as a sacred place for diving, and there are many spectacular diving spots where you can join a tour and go by boat.

Although the requirement to obtain a license is a drawback, there are also a number of experience diving tours available that do not require a license if accompanied by an instructor!

SUP

慶良間諸島でSUPを楽しむ2人

Stand Up Paddleboarding, or SUP, is perhaps the most popular marine activity that has become increasingly popular in recent years.

SUP is a marine activity in which you paddle in the ocean on a large surfboard or a board specially designed for SUP, and you can enjoy the sensation of floating gracefully on the sea.

Fun & Attraction

SUP is not difficult and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders.

The board is quite large and stable when rocked by waves, and its stability aids in maintaining balance.

The reason why such SUPs are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds is their photogenic nature.

This is a very photogenic activity, which has led to a growing number of competitors, especially Instagrammers.

cruising

Cruising on a sightseeing boat is also very popular as an activity that allows visitors to enjoy the islands of the Kerama archipelago and the spacious ocean location.

The Kerama blue ocean viewed while enjoying an elegant boat ride offers a different beauty from that seen while swimming in the ocean.

Fun & Attraction

The appeal of cruising is that a wide variety of plans are available.

For example, the sea in Kerama looks very different at different times of the day: morning, noon, and night.

Sailing in the afternoon sun is full of vivacious fun, while sailing at dusk, when you can watch the sun go down, is full of quiet beauty.

It is an activity with such great appeal that some people become repeat customers and enjoy cruising at different times of the day over and over again.

Of course, a wide variety of marine sports are widely enjoyed on the beaches of the Kerama Islands.

Fun & Attraction

There are many different types of marine sports, but the most popular is jet skiing.

The exhilaration of running through the Keramas blue ocean while splashing in the waves is the most exhilarating feeling of all.

Parasailing, in which people are towed by jet skis through the air, is also offered here and there, so how about enjoying not only the ocean but also the sky of Kerama?

Canoe/Kayak

Canoeing and kayaking may be considered the lowest hurdle to participation among the numerous activities.

Even though it is a small boat, it is firm and stable and does not require full-body immersion, so even those who are not good swimmers can participate with ease.

Fun & Attraction

The advantage of canoeing and kayaking is that you can enjoy walking on the sea at your own pace at your leisure.

The waters of Kerama are crystal clear, and if you look over the surface of the ocean from the top of the boat, you can see deep into the clear waters.

Another popular feature is that it can be ridden by two people, making it possible to enjoy the ride with children who are not yet ready to enjoy the activity alone.

Of course, it is also a great ride for friends or couples.

whale watching

慶良間諸島で見られるクジラ

Lastly, I would like to introduce an activity unique to Kerama: whale watching.

Kerama is very famous as a place where whales can be seen, and if you join a tour, you will have a high probability of seeing them.

Fun & Attraction

Although the season is limited to January through March, humpback whales come to the waters of the Kerama Islands.

Every year, whales visit the waters of Kerama to breed, and at that time of year, a very large number of whales can be seen in the area.

You will encounter heartwarming sights such as whales dynamically spouting their tides and whales with their parents and offspring.

If you have a chance to visit the Kerama Islands just at that time of year, this is a tour you should definitely join.
